Barbara R. Deane is vice-president of The GilDeane Group, Inc., an Hispanic-owned consulting and publishing firm in Seattle, Washington. She is an experienced trainer and consultant in the areas of workforce diversity, diversity and cross-cultural management, intercultural communication and negotiation.

 
For the past 18 years, she has served as editor of the firm's publication, Cultural Diversity at Work journal, now online at www.DiversityCentral.com. A pioneer in diversity publishing, Cultural Diversity at Work was the first workforce diversity journal in the United States in 1988; it quickly gained a worldwide readership.

 
Ms. Deane approaches her work from the foundation of culture, both at the social and organizational levels, as a basis for understanding and constructing processes for change and effectiveness.

 
Ms. Deane is the executive director of the NW Diversity Learning Series, a unique educational consortium of employers in the greater Seattle, Washington area. The Series is now in its ninth year. She facilitates a companion organization, the Diversity Sponsors Network, a professional development group for diversity leaders.

 
For the past 14 years, she and GilDeane president, Dr. Carlos Gil, have trained and prepared U.S. Foreign Service Officers and other officials to work in Latin American countries or with their counterparts in those countries. Barbara speaks Spanish, has lived in Mexico several extended periods, and has traveled in Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Nicaragua.

 
Barbara has a Master's Degree in Interpersonal Communication from the University of Washington, Seattle. She holds a B.A. from The Ohio State University, cum laude, with distinction in Intercultural Communication. She has written more than 100 articles about cultural diversity in the work environment and is a sought-after speaker on diversity issues.
